Power Cat vs Monohull: Why Go Twin-Hull?

If you’re exploring power catamarans, you’re likely already aware of their growing popularity, and for good reason. But “more stable” and “more space” only tell half the story. Here’s what’s actually happening underneath those claims, and what’s worth knowing before you compare a cat against a monohull.

Why the beam makes such a difference

A catamaran’s stability isn’t a marketing claim, it’s geometry. Stability at rest comes down to something naval architects call righting moment, essentially how hard a boat resists tipping. A monohull resists tipping through the shape and weight of a single hull below the waterline. A catamaran resists tipping by having two hulls spaced widely apart, the same principle as a wider stance giving you better balance than standing with your feet together. The wider the beam relative to the boat’s length, the more resistance to roll you get, which is why catamarans sit noticeably flatter at anchor and under way than a monohull of similar length.

Where the extra space actually comes from

The wide beam doesn’t just stabilise the boat, it changes what’s possible inside it. Because the two hulls carry the load, the deck and cabin structure connecting them can be built wide and open, rather than tapering to a single keel the way a monohull does. That’s what gives catamarans wider salons, larger cockpits, and genuine separation between living zones, rather than one combined space doing several jobs. You’re not getting more boat for the same footprint by accident, you’re getting it because the structural logic is different from the ground up.

Fuel efficiency, and where it comes from

Twin-hull efficiency isn’t automatic, it depends on hull design, but the underlying principle is real. Each hull on a catamaran is narrower and finer than the single hull on a monohull of equivalent length, which usually means less wetted surface area relative to the volume of boat you’re moving through the water. Less wetted surface means less drag, and less drag means the engines work less hard to maintain a given speed. This is also why hull design matters more than the simple fact of having two hulls, a poorly designed catamaran hull can still be inefficient, which is part of why the build quality and design pedigree behind the hull matters as much as the twin-hull configuration itself.

Handling better at rest

Less rolling at anchor comes down to the same beam-and-geometry principle as stability under way, but it matters most when you’re not moving. A monohull at anchor rolls with each wave that hits it broadside. A catamaran’s two hulls each respond to wave action independently, which dampens the rolling motion that would otherwise be transmitted through to the cabin. If you’ve ever tried to cook a meal, sleep, or land a fish on a rolling monohull at anchor, this is the difference that’s usually felt within the first ten minutes aboard a cat.

Manoeuvrability, and why twin engines matter as much as twin hulls

The dual-engine setup that comes with most power catamarans adds a second advantage independent of the hull shape itself. With engines mounted on each hull rather than one central engine, you get independent throttle and steering control on each side. That means you can pivot the boat almost on the spot by putting one engine ahead and one astern, or crab sideways into a berth in a way that’s far harder to do with a single engine and rudder. In a tight marina, this is often the difference between a stressful docking and a routine one.

What’s worth weighing up

None of this means a catamaran is automatically the better choice for everyone. Bridge clearance under low structures can be a genuine consideration depending on cabin height and the waters you’ll be cruising. Catamarans can also be more sensitive to load distribution than a monohull, since uneven weight across the two hulls affects trim more noticeably.
